The day seems to hold plenty of light as I leave the gathering of folks, perhaps a barbecue, to retrieve the keys and hoodie I'd left under a tree a couple of blocks away. As I enter onto the main street it becomes a newly paved county road as flat as the landscape it crosses.
Realizing that the distance I have to go has changed, but not curious that the city blocks have become long expanses of nothingness, I begin to run. I am thrilled to move quickly and unimpeded without the usual heavy muscleless legs or worse the knuckle-dragging that is usually required to move this body forward.
Miles away, at the second perfectly perpendicular road, I find my tree. The only other living thing out here but me. It may be an oak, it may be the tree of enlightenment but I don't pause to wonder. I grab my things and quickly return to the road, the sun is setting.
Twenty, maybe thirty steps and I am back on the road in the blackest of nights. There are no houses or even the moon. Leaning down, I feel for the side of the tarmac, move to the middle of the road and run. At times I swerve into the shallow gully filled with water or I wait for the occasional car to pass as I hide below the water line. When I think that the driver can no longer see me I get up and run as fast as I can, using the tail lights until blackness envelopes me again.
I figured it out, pretty simple and pathetic really! Since I am pretty sure that no one actually reads what I write, but just looks at the occasional pretty picture, this will be a test. So, if you are actually, really reading this, please take a few minutes to interpret my dream. Thanks in advance phantom reader!

Hi, Ginny, to me your dream seems to express both a wish for, and fear of, freedom ... in some ways you feel free, but in others you sense impediments and look for refuge until they pass. Interesting stuff...
ReplyDeleteI'm wishing you the happiest of holidays and I hope my feeble attempt at dream interpretation isn't too irritating!

Wow, very different from what I came up with but it really hits the nail on the head for me right now. Thanks, Reuben!
